The Bola EXP 40R is a 40mm T1000 UD matte carbon disc wheelset on DT Swiss 240s hubs with CX-Ray spokes, 1270g, for versatile road and gravel performance.

The versatile blade: 40mm, 1270g, DT Swiss 240s. The Bola EXP 40R pairs a 40mm T1000 matte rim (28-32mm external, 21-26mm internal) with DT Swiss 240s hubs and Sapim CX-Ray spokes — balancing aerodynamic gain with climbing agility for road racing, performance gravel and endurance days.

Buying Guide.

Internal width - 21mm: 28-32c at 60-80 PSI for tarmac.

Internal width - 24mm: 28-32c at 55-75 PSI for rolling road.

Internal width - 26mm: 32c at 50-60 PSI for all-road.

Max rider weight: rated to 105kg - check rider plus gear.

Same-depth series: the CE 40R (~$1111) adds foil carbon spokes and the EXT 40R (~$1111) goes ceramic and lighter; the EXP 40R keeps a genuine DT Swiss 240s.

Adjacent depth: the EXP 45R above adds aero depth - choose the 40R for climbing and crosswind calm, the 45R for speed.

Target Audience & Usage Notes.

Disc-brake road and gravel frames, 12x100/12x142 thru-axle.

Max system weight 105kg.

Not for deep aero time trials or extreme off-road.

The Ride That Awaits.

The rim is compromise made beautifully - fast on the flat, light on the climb, steady in the gusts that unnerve deeper wheels. Every ride feels like the right ride; nothing asks for more than you have. Free shipping and a 3-year rim / 2-year wheelset warranty make it the wise first upgrade.

Trade-offs & Considerations
Aero vs Crosswind: A 40mm rim saves about 3.5W versus a 28mm training rim at 40km/h and 10 deg yaw, while remaining calmer in crosswinds than the 50R; going to 50mm adds roughly 1.5W but noticeably more steering effort on open descents.
Weight vs Stiffness: At 1270g this T1000 set is about 120g lighter than a typical 40mm alloy-carbon hybrid (plus or minus 5g), with lateral stiffness within 3%; the trade-off is a slightly more forgiving, less racy rear feel out of the saddle.
Tire-Type Trade-off: The 21/24/26mm internal channels run 25-50c tubeless; on the 21mm bed run 28-32c at 60-80 PSI, on the 26mm bed run wider gravel at 40-50 PSI, trading top pressure for volume and comfort.
Sourcing & Delivery Trade-off: Stock builds ship in 1-3 business days at $999; custom width or decals add 7-15 business days and about a $100-150 premium.
Config Ladder: Moving to hyper carbon spokes (EXT spec) saves about 100g for roughly +$110 and adds about 5 days; ceramic bearings are already fitted, and the 36T ratchet (about 10 deg) can be stepped to a 54T ratchet (about 6.7 deg) for faster engagement.

Recommended Use Cases
Triathlon / Time Trial: IM and club TT fields reward deep-section aero; 40mm profile minimises drag on flat-to-rolling courses where aero dominates climbing.
Aero Road Racing: Fast flat road races and crits on disc frames; 2026 WorldTour teams run 28-30mm tubeless — pair the inner bed accordingly for rolling speed.
Race-Pace Training: Open, fast courses where holding aero position pays off; stable crosswind handling builds confidence before race day.
Compatibility
Brake Standard: Disc brake, Center Lock rotor (140/160mm)
Axle: Front 12x100mm thru-axle; Rear 12x142mm thru-axle (QR with adapters)

FAQ
How does this 40mm deep rim handle crosswinds on fast descents?
An optimised 40mm profile keeps steering torque predictable at 10°–15° yaw, so high-speed descents stay planted.
Do these rims accept standard clincher tyres, and what is the pressure limit on hookless?
Hooked rims fit standard clincher tyres directly, with or without tubes. For hookless rims, per ETRTO, tubeless tyres 28c and wider must not exceed 72.5 PSI (5.0 bar) to prevent unseating.
Are ceramic bearings durable in rain or rough conditions - do they need frequent service?
The bearings use dual-lip contact labyrinth dust/water seals. No special disassembly is needed for wet riding; a routine grease top-up every ~5,000 km or after each rainy season is enough.
Which tyres should I run, and at what pressure?
On the 21mm bed run 28-32c tubeless at 60-80 PSI; on the 26mm bed run gravel at 40-50 PSI. The bed accepts 25-50c.
Will I really pay no customs or VAT for delivery to the US and EU?
