The Bola EXT 40R is a 40mm T1000 UD carbon road disc wheelset on a BL180 54T ceramic hub with Hyper carbon spokes, 1170g, for climbing-focused road and gravel versatility.

The lightweight all-rounder: 40mm, 1170g, ceramic. The Bola EXT 40R pairs a 40mm T1000 rim (28-32mm external, 21-26mm internal) with a BL180 CNC aluminum hub, TPI ceramic bearings and Hyper carbon spokes — a climbing-focused all-rounder, light enough for hill repeats, deep enough for aero road speed.

Buying Guide.

Internal width - 21mm: 28c at 80-90 PSI for tarmac.

Internal width - 24mm: 28-32c at 70-85 PSI for rolling road.

Internal width - 26mm: 32c at 50-60 PSI for all-road.

Max rider weight: rated to 105kg - the lowest in EXT; heavier riders should consider the EXP 50R.

Same-depth series: the EXP 40R (~$999) keeps a DT Swiss 240s hub and the CE 40R (~$1111) pairs DT ratchet with foil spokes; the EXT 40R is the lightweight ceramic all-rounder.

Adjacent depth: the EXT 45R above adds aero depth - choose the 40R for climbing, the 45R for flat speed.

Target Audience & Usage Notes.

Disc-brake road and gravel frames, 12x100/12x142 thru-axle.

Max system weight 105kg (lowest in EXT); heavier riders should consider EXP 50R (120kg).

Ceramic bearings need clean conditions; Hyper carbon spokes are less impact-tolerant.

Not for extreme off-road.

The Ride That Awaits.

Out of the saddle it answers before you finish thinking - no heavy rim dragging behind, just lightness and intent, the rim steady in the crosswinds that tease deeper wheels. One wheel for the hills, the flats, the everyday. Free shipping and a 3-year rim / 2-year wheelset warranty mean order today.

Trade-offs & Considerations
Aero vs Crosswind: The 40mm rim saves about 3.5W versus a 28mm rim at 40km/h and 10 deg yaw while staying calmer than a 50mm section; the 50R adds about 1.5W of aero for noticeably busier crosswind steering.
Weight vs Stiffness: At 1170g with hyper carbon spokes, this is about 100g lighter than the steel-spoke EXP 40R (plus or minus 5g), with lateral stiffness within 3%; the ultralight build trades a little impact compliance for climb acceleration.
Tire-Type Trade-off: The 21/24/26mm internal channels run 25-50c tubeless; 21mm for 28c at 80-90 PSI, 26mm for gravel at 40-50 PSI.
Sourcing & Delivery Trade-off: Stock ships in 1-3 business days at $1,111; custom adds 7-15 business days and about a $100-150 premium.
Config Ladder: TPI ceramic bearings and the 54T ratchet (about 6.7 deg) are already fitted; the steel-spoke EXP 40R trims about $110 but adds 100g and slower about 10 deg engagement.

Recommended Use Cases
Triathlon / Time Trial: IM and club TT fields reward deep-section aero; 40mm profile minimises drag on flat-to-rolling courses where aero dominates climbing.
Aero Road Racing: Fast flat road races and crits on disc frames; 2026 WorldTour teams run 28-30mm tubeless — pair the inner bed accordingly for rolling speed.
Race-Pace Training: Open, fast courses where holding aero position pays off; stable crosswind handling builds confidence before race day.
Compatibility
Brake Standard: Disc brake, Center Lock rotor (140/160mm)
Axle: Front 12x100mm thru-axle; Rear 12x142mm thru-axle (QR with adapters)

FAQ
Can a damaged carbon spoke be replaced at a local bike shop?
Yes. The spokes use a mechanical two-piece lock-up design (not a bonded one-piece), and spare carbon spokes ship free with the wheelset. Any shop mechanic with a standard truing stand can swap a single spoke in about 10 minutes - no factory return needed.
Will carbon spokes snap suddenly in crosswinds or under lateral load?
Carbon spokes deliver ~3,800N tensile strength (above the ~3,000N of top steel spokes) with ~30% higher lateral stiffness. Potholes, sprinting out of the saddle and everyday riding carry no metal-fatigue fracture risk.
Are ceramic bearings durable in rain or rough conditions - do they need frequent service?
The bearings use dual-lip contact labyrinth dust/water seals. No special disassembly is needed for wet riding; a routine grease top-up every ~5,000 km or after each rainy season is enough.
Which tyres should I run, and at what pressure?
On the 21mm bed run 28c road at 80-90 PSI; on the 26mm bed run gravel at 40-50 PSI. The bed accepts 25-50c.
Will I really pay no customs or VAT for delivery to the US and EU?
Yes. The Economy channel ships DDP - duties and VAT are fully prepaid by us, cleared in advance, delivered to your door with no extra payment to customs or the courier.
